I did exactly that and was faced with “Onyx has no windows.” I removed it from
the table, uninstalled the application, deleted it from the trashcan and then
restarted my system. Then I installed the fresh copy, opened system
preferences, opened the security and privacy applet, tabbed to the table entry
for accessibility, then tabbed to the lock to unlock, entered my password, then
tabbed back to the add button, chose Onyx in the open dialog. Made sure it was
chechmarked and then closed system preferences. I then tried to open the
application from the applications window in finder. I was again faced with
“Onyx has no windows”. Also, when I tried to quit onyx in that state, it would
bonk at me. The only way to quit onyx was to VO+esc and then choose force quit.

Next step, open a terminal window and then type in the complete path to the
onyx unix executable and then press enter. Onyx would start, ask me for my
system credentials (password), then present me with the application pane. In
the toolbar, the first item is marked Onyx and pressing the button inside that
pane resulted in a dialog announcing itself as “kookoo’s egg. I had to to close
that as there wasn’t anything useful there to find. So, I tried to run the
system maintenance scripts (toolbar item 2). Once I hit execute, a dialog box
would open stating that a system restart would be needed after running the
scripts. Then another dialog would pop up requesting permission to close all
windows. At this point, once I hit OK, VoiceOver would stop, then restart with
a troubleshooter pane, which I would hit OK on, then I would be left in onyx
only too have VoiceOver freeze up with no way to reset. After 20 minutes, and
no change to the system, I was forced to power down using the power button and
restart manually. Trying again with subsequent toolbar items evoked the exact
same behavior.

There is something very wrong with how onyx works with VoiceOver in Catalina on
my system. I have never before encountered this behavior in any previous
version of both the application and the OS.

So, at this point, I am completely at a loss as to how to proceed. Every
attempt ends in a system lockup that isn’t recoverable without a forced
restart. I even turned off the screen reader and had my sighted roomie try and
run it normally, only to have it also present with no visible windows. He also
even tried my method using the terminal application and running the unix
executable and was met with the same type of system lockup.
