I’ve seen this sometimes. Try a different audio source, like a different pair of headphones or something, or the built-in speakers. I’ve only seen this when trying to do something on the Mac when on a FaceTime call, but that wasn’t the call audio that went away, but VoiceOver’s audio that would just fade away.
