Dave, in olde rbuilds it is User and groups > log in options > User voiceover
at the log on screen. It is a check box.

Brad,
This does not appear to be consistent with Mojave. I suspect this is for
Catalina or Big Sur?

Sorry Greg, that won’t do it.

To enable VoiceOver at the log on screen, one needs to do the following:
1. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups.
2. In the Users, groups and login options table, select Login options.
3. Select the Lock to Make Changes, and enter the Admin password for your
machine.
4. Navigate to the Accessibility Options… button, and press VO + Spacebar to
open.
5. Select VoiceOver from the table, and then select Apply, to save changes and
exit the dialog.

Hi,

For some silly reason I can no longer recall I did not choose to have
Voice Over start automatically when I boot my Mac Mini. So, I'm forever
doing Command F5 before logging in. It's getting old, but I'm also not
finding where to undo this choice and choose to have Voice Over
auto-enabled on startup for the login.

I'm poking around in Users and Groups but not finding this as a login
option. Seems I'm missing something obvious, but I am stumped.

This is Big Sur 11.15.2. Any help gratefully accepted.

Hi Terri, no I do not think there is an equivalent to Audio Hijack for the

in. That really isn’t practical. I think the Macintosh solution is a good idea.
Do you need portability or can you make do with a Mac mini and a wireless
keyboard? Do you have a budget for this project? Audio recordings can eat up a
great deal of disk space quickly. A 1TB or larger hard drive is a good idea.

Hello everyone,

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all of you who took the time to
try and help me out. I really appreciate all the great information, and
thoughts. It has really helped me to understand things, when it comes to
Macbooks.

Karen asked if I would like to explain my goals. I appreciate this, because I
think that could be helpful. I think it might help me figure out what exactly I
might need.

So my main goal is to be able to purchase a device, such as a Mac, or an iPad,
so that I can record audio. I am huge into collecting audio described content.
We have Spectrum cable. Some of the channels that carry audio described content
that I would like to capture, don't carry the audio description over my cable
box.

However, I can get it, using the Spectrum App.

So I would like to be able to use a program like audio hijack, and capture the
streaming audio. I want to go to the Spectrum site, and stream the channel I
want, and capture the audio description.

That is the main thing I am hoping to do. I could use my windows laptop. But in
order to do this, I would have to go through many steps to make this happen.
Including purchasing a sound card.

But then I would not be able to easily access my laptop for other things. Such
as checking mail, and all the other things that I do.

These are my thoughts. What do you all think?

I would consider purchasing an iPad. I am open to doing this. But when I had
one years ago, the main thing I didn't care for, was how the screen would
sometimes be in colomns. There didn't seem a way to make this optional. Or stop
it from happening. I found this to be rather frustrating, and chalenging for me.

But also, does the audio hijack program even work on an iPad?

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing what you all might have to say.

Hi Terri,
May I ask how you define doing lots of audio recording?
It seems important here, because you will want the hardware to support your

The programs you use have their own requirements. If you use external
recording related equipment, that will matter as well.
I hope? this offer comes from a reliable source, so the machine is as
advertised etc.
Do you want to share more on your goals?

Hello everyone,

My boyfriend found a deal for a refurbished Macbook Air. I am very

interested in purchasing this.

However, I would like to get some opinions on it, if at all possible. I

don't know much about using a Mac. I have always wanted to use one. I

know in some ways they can have limits though.

I would mainly like to be able to do a lot of different audio recording.

I currently use an HP laptop for the majority of things. And probably

still will.

Anyway, this Macbook Air has 4 Gigs of RAM, Intel Core I 5, 1.6 GHZ, 128

GB SSD. It doesn't state what version of the operating system it comes with.

Does this possibly mean it doesn't include one?

Also, how likely is it that this could be updated, if at some point I

wanted to do this?

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri
