I will add that previously one could subscribe via e-mail instead of
visiting the google groups site at all.
I am guessing this is gone, especially given google's desire to track
everyone these days.
would freelists.org be a possibility?

I haven’t actually seen what the invites look like from the receiving end so
perhaps someone else here may be of more help regarding the actual wording of
the links in the invitation.
-But yes, you will need to accept the invitation to be a part of the group.
