If you interact with the "table" that contains the list of messages, you
should be able to read through them efficiently with up/down cursor
keys, and, if I recall correctly, left/right to expand/collapse threads.
This assumes you're using Apple Mail.
If you're using Microsoft Outlook for Mac, this aspect of operation is
similar.
