Your symptoms are too  vague to be diagnosed without knowing what’s actually 
selected in your mailbox list ', your view menu and your mailbox search area.  
You’ll need to 
 work with  the Apple accessibilty des or talk with somebody can review what 
actually is showing up in your mailbox list in your messages list.
