List view does all I need.

I generally just use Command-Down-Arrow to move into files or subdirectories.

Right/Left-Arrow collapse/expand subdirectories. Option-Right-Arrow expands the directory in the VO cursor, and all of its subdirectories. I don't use these commands as often.
