There are two splitters, one between the Mailboxes list and Messages list and one to the right of the Messages list. Do not collapse the first one between the Mailboxes and Messages lists. Collapse the second one by increasing the value to 100%. If your Mailboxes list is hidden, press Command-Control-S to show it. Even with the splitter to the right of the Message list collapsed, unchecking Use Column Layout in the View menu will allow you to hear a preview of the message. Check Use Column Layout if you want to navigate mailboxes by columns.
