Try going to the web page:
http://www.javatester.org/version.html
Bring up item chooser menu and type "Ask" to navigate to the heading "Method 1: Ask Java". Then VO-Right arrow to read "The version and vendor from the JRE" followed by the reported version information. (There are ways to check this by querying Safari's installed plug-ins, but this is easier and the page goes on to give information and links to the latest Java versions for the Mac.)
