A cross over cable takes away the need for a switch or a hub between two machines. You should be able to use a crossover cable so long as you setup your network addressing correctly on each machine and also setup your sharing on each machine so that you know where to copy the data across to the second machine.

It's about twenty bucks. You should be able to find it with a google search. Otherwise, I transfer over a gig or two and it takes about 10 to 20 mins.
