The only relationship of metformin to kidneys I have seen was not that it causes kidney problems. It is that if there are kidney problems one should not use metformin.

Metformin is removed from the body via the kidneys. If they are not working in the normal range metformin is not removed as quickly and can build up. It is the high level of metformin that should be avoided.

Metformin has now more then a 20 year track record and is perhaps one of the most safe drugs to use based on that history.
