Well, since you are willing to use the shel... The "open" command described at http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/open.1.html
is your friend. I am not sure if with quicktime you could use the "open *.mp3" -a Quicktime but if not en wrapping a simple shell "for" loop around the open command would work.
