I am not sure of everything going on here, but there are a few things that can be different about trash configurations...
1. There is the possiblility of deleteing in place in which case command-L should show you the deleted messages still being in the Inbox. 2. Mail could be using the google "GoogleMail/bin" mailbox for trash In this case, the mail might get completely deleted by Google's empty bin or Mails delete functions. 3. Mail could be using either an older GMail folder or a Mail created folder for its trash folder. It might even be possible to configure Mail to use a "Local" copy for the trash folder. If you have type 1 deletions, then viewing the deleted messages and then selecting one with the VoiceOver cursor should allow you to Un-delete it. I believe the undo functionality in other cases might get disabled as soon as you move the VO cursor, but you should be able to find your message in the Trash with a bit of Sherlock ah, Oops, wrong Apple search metaphor...
