Actuallly, you are going about it the wrong way.  the by far faster way is to 
just press command+space to open the spotlight search and type "term" without 
the quotes.  The first hit will be the terminal app.  Press return on this and 
you'll be right in.

For future reference, if you really want to do it the long way, you need to 
open your apps folder by just pressing shift+command+a.  Then, open utilities.  
Terminal is in the Utilities subfolder.  Now, there's still another way to do 
this.  Shift+command+u will pop open the Utilities folder for you.
