Hi, If you want to join the network, and you are trying to extend your netgear's wireless network, you need to hook it via ethernet. Airport express doesn't extend a third party vendor's wifi network as its base band for one is different and if you go to the apple support page airport express isn't third party wireless router compatible.
YOu can however use an ethernet from your modem/router and your airport will automatically join in, from which point you can either create another wifi network or bridge from your existing wifi router's share point.
