I think it will depend upon the app. For example and this is probably not the 
best example, but it comes to mind immediately. For games such as chess, the 
larger area would be very helpful. Web browsing provides more room to navigate 
and thus more info is displayed. THe brief play I had a while ago revealed that 
menus required less double tapping here and there, and perhaps less swiping. 
Like I said, I think it will come down to what you are most comfortable with 
and what provides you the most flexibility.
I for one love my iPHone and cannot imagine life without one. :) Ok, a little 
extreme, but seriously, I use my phone for so much it surprises me sometimes. 
The fact I can put it in my pocket and carry books, music, check e-mail, and so 
forth is just great. Of course my pockets are not quite large enough for the 
iPad, but I can see uses for it.
