I would go ahead and install skype, it works well, though the interface is a 
bit cluttered in the newest version. There are 2 ways apps are installed. For 
the most part, apps come as a disk image, this has a .dmg extension, be sure to 
enable the showing of file extensions in finder preferences. Highlight the file 
and open it with command o. You may have several files, the ones you are 
interested in have a .pkg or .app extension. If it has a .pkg extension, this 
indicates that it's an install package. Open it to start the install. Most of 
the time, you will find a file with a .app extension. If this is the case, 
highlight it and press command c to copy it. Now open your applications folder 
with command shift a, and press command v to paste the file in the applications 
folder. That's all there is to it. You can then open the application like any 
other file. No messing around with shared files or registry keys, none of that 
garbage.
