If you do want to make an alias on the desktop, you can. Go to the applications
folder, find the program, use vo shift m to get to the context menu for the
program and choose make alias. The alias will be created in the same folder the
program is in. For example, making an alias for Skype.app, creates an alias
named Skype.app, but of the type alias. The alias is just a link to skype.app
from this example, and the alias is not the program itself. Now put the vo
cursor on it, and press command c to copy it to the clipboard.
If you run snow leopard, go to the desktop, paste it with command v, go back to
the applications folder and delete the alias there. You now have its copy on
the desktop. If you click it, the program launches.
If you have Lion, after hitting command c and going to the desktop, just move
the alias from your applications folder to your desktop by pressing command
option v. Adding the option key to the paste moves the file rather than copying
it.
