Ok so following that video link i posted, i went and tried some psycho babble on my macbook air, and save a few quirks with the settings which took most of the obvious newbie shroud away, this thing is pretty nifty, as there are a few points that relates this feature to siri, and how one can achieve something similar with applescripting.
The internal mic on the macbook air is sufficient for the speech server to recognize your words, though usually one tends to voice it out clearly by fear of stuffing it up. The first try went well, i asked the time and my peter infovox voice chimed it nicely. I tried switching from app to app and it worked fine too. I then looked into the possibilities of the settings, and the constant listening with a keyword for triggering is pretty cool. You name your interlocutor whatever you want, call it siri for instance, and it will only perform an action on identified words or sentences after you call it. SO for example, "siri, scratch my toenail" would do the trick, if you of course have an applescript for scratching your toenail. Now onto the applescript. There's a very brief introduction to making your custom commands for any application using applescript, simple enough for those of you beginners or enthusiasts, to get a few things going: http://lifehacker.com/215764/hack-attack-make-your-macs-speech-recognition-work-for-you Pretty cool right? Now there's also some commands you can get familiar with in the speech system preference, namely global commands. You will find that they include commands such as make this recognizable. This one allows an interface element to be recognized for speech. So in theory one can click an element on voice over compatible user interfaces. If used with an applescript, a sequential can be made too. The sky's the limit on this one, and i'm pretty surprised i never really tried this feature until i really got hooked on siri on my phone which is now ubiquitous for a lot of tasks which normally demanded extensive focus and time from myself with outcomes which are trivial. Hoping apple deepens the functionality of siri and speech rec on the mac further down the line for many things.
