I'm not sure further on the type of links these were except that hitting the return key along with any of the modifier keys like Option, Command, or any combination, would just pop me into the preview of that PDF. I never saw that file down in my downloads folder. It's like they just popped into a text rendering of that PDF like another web link. Nothing was actually downloaded from what I could tell. Another thought is maybe they sorta "streamed" the PDF?
