There is actually.  It isn't used as much, but it does exist.  For example, if 
you are browsing files on windows, a folder has a plus sign beside it to 
indicate that more information is available.  Click the plus sign and the tree 
will expand to show the folders underneeth of the one you clicked.

The same is true of email conversations.  Click the plus and the conversation 
expands to show you the individual messages.  Then the plus becomes a minus and 
clicking the minus sign hides all the messages.
