Chris and others: when I hit cmd-l in chrome, I get put in the edit field as you'd expect. I then hear the html load ouns and am focused on some new page that alwasy loads when I hit cmd-l. I must then move back to the text field and interact again before I can type.
Stacey: it is a feature that tries to find an article on a webpage and only present that. Facebook would not benefit as there is far too much goin on and no large chunks of text. However, if you go to a news site and open an article, it will help you a lot. Still, it can't hurt; while on Facebook, hit cmd-shift-r and see what happens. You may well get an error sound as I don't think Reader is available on pages where the mac can't find an article to read.
