Use the control-option-command-space keystroke. I typically need to press it once to get started and then press it once on each item I wish to select. If you wish to deselect an item you have selected, simply press the same keystroke, control-option-command-space on the item again. You can use VO-F6 to check which items are selected before you copy, cut etc.
