I haven't tested this out, but my theory is that you might be able to add them to the VO pronunciation dictionary to be spoken differently. For example, if you know what keystroke is used to make a symbol that is ignored when VO comes to it, you could tell VO to pronounce that symbol as whatever you wanted to hear. Would that work?
