Did you repair permissions after installing Mountain Lion? Also, since you say you are using space instead of vo-space, did you check to make sure you don't have vo-keys locked with control-option-semi-colon (I know it's not likely; just covering the bases). Did you make sure your computer is one that meets the system requirements for upgrading to Lion (though it probably would have told you when you tried to install). Have you checked your settings in voiceover utility to make sure nothing is different than you had it before?
