Greetings:

Someone was asking recently how to access the Emoji keyboard, and other special 
characters. It is done by pressing command+option+T in messages, which will 
then reveal the special characters. You can choose from the categories table, 
"Emoji" and proceed to the other tables to get more specific. You can also 
search for what you wish to send in the toolbar. once you've found what you 
wish to send, press vo+space on it, and enter will send it.

I've not found that the Mac will read them, Voiceover just says "group" but it 
will read them on an iDevice.
