Hi,

Not sure why it's acting this way but as Daniel mentioned, when on the Desktop, 
you can press cmd-comma to bring up Finder Prefs, then check the items such as 
Hard Disks and External Disks that you wish shown on your Desktop.  This was 
the default behaviour long ago prior to the Sidebar being introduced.
