Also of interest would be to do the About This Mac and do the System Report and then goto the WiFi section. In particular there should be something called PHY Mode which will tell you how you're connected. Mine for example says 802.11N which is my wifi connection to the Airport base station. Generally 802.11 is followed by a letter such as A, B, G or N where N is the fastest/latest flavor. Also in the System Report should be a line called Signal/Noise with two numbers. Mine is -69 dBm / -88 dBm. The bigger the difference between these two numbers the better. So I have 19 dBm which seems to work pretty well. I get about 30Mbps down and 2MBps up on my cable modem connection or about 8-9MB/s copying a file from my wifi laptop to a wired Mac desktop.

Could you supply more detail about the machines please?

• Model of each machine, amount of RAM, version of OS.
• Go into the Utilities folder, open Network Utility, make sure that the WIFI Interface is selected and under the Info tab, confirm the network speed for each machine.

Hi there folks,

We have to macs in the house, mine and that of my fiancé.They are both connected to the same Wi-Fi router, mine is working at normal speeds, for this country anyway, but my fiancé's is being extraordinarily slow.I cannot figure out why or how, but if anybody knows what to try, please help.

My fiancé is threatening to throw the mac through the window!
