You would be correct. I have to have my mac on and iTunes open for this to
work. But my media is stored on the nas, and it works for me for now.

Hmmm, I see what you're doing here. The Mac is providing the HomeShare for
the Apple Tv so it works. I believe, though, that if the Mac was turned off
or did not have iTunes running, this configuration may not work. I'm not
100% positive on this one (probably only 98%), so I can be corrected if
necessary but I seem to recall that the iTunes server is simply providing
iTunes Sharing which is different than HomeSharing. It is the HomeSharing
that is required for the Apple TV to access an iTunes Library.

This is possible. I use a western digital 8TB NAS, and it has an iTunes
server on it. I store my iTunes library there, and point my iTunes from my
Mac to this folder. And I have no issues. My appleTV pulls and streams the
media content from there just fine. I turn on home sharing, and use the
same appleID that my iTunes library has, and I have no issues at all. Let
me know if you have anymore questions.

Hi All,

Does anyone know, can an Apple TV pull content from a NAS on a local
network? Either by providing the Apple TV in some manner the IP address,
folder share and user credentials of the share so that it can scan the
folder, or, by enabling iTunes Server which is a feature of my NAS.

iTunes Server is not the same as Home Sharing as found in iTunes the
application.

Any thoughts much appriciated. Essentually what I want to do is use
something like Apple TV to stream content from a share on my NAS rather than
having to push to it from iTunes or an iOS device.

thanks.
