Hi,

Try adding the Option key to that key combination. The Option key brings up
special items that normally aren't seen in menus. For example, in the Go menu,
while the Option key is down, the Library folder choice is available whereas it
is not without the Option key down. The Option key can also be used to force
locked items into the Trash. An extra thing to try is to Restart your computer
then retry emptying the Trash with the cmd-Option-shift-Delete combination.
Occasionally, items that are locked will not be released from the Trash until
after Restart. If none of this works, there is a way in Terminal to really
force the issue, I will let you know that one if all else fails.

In answer to your question about the items only being present when your
external HD was connected, this is normal behaviour. If those items originally
resided on the external HD, then they are placed in a Trash folder that is
hidden on the external HD. Just like the situation when you have multiple
users on a computer, each has their own Trash.

HTH.
