I can't speak for anyone else, but as for me… I used to be able to read HTML messages fine when I just viewed gmail in a web browser. HTML emails are annoying in Mac Mail, however, so I only send rich text messages. I don't send plane text messages, but if I receive an email with too much HTML, such as images etcetera, I'll press command-option-P to view it as plane text.
