I think that the best way to accomplish a test drive of Mavericks is to first image your existing OS, using SuperDuper or carbon copy cloner, and then just upgrade to Mavericks through the app store. If you're not happy with it, you should be able to just copy the image of the previous OS back onto the Mac. That way there's no messing around with partitioning. If my reasoning is wrong, I hope someone will speak and let me know (before I go ahead and do it myself)
