When I updated mine, I had a computer that was still a very new computer, like 
maybe a month or two old. Then I paid some money to extend it for another two 
years. That gave me a total of AppleCare and warranty on my Mac for three 
years. I did mine at the Apple Store, but I think you can do it like on the 
iPhone or on your computer by going to Apple.com. Then I understand that after 
the three years, you can pay $20 if you need any support for Apple care after 
that.
