Well, in mavericks this has changed. The drag and drop feature, for mailboxes, at least for me hasn’t worked since I upgraded. What has worked, is the mouse down and up command. So mouse down on the mailbox you want to add to favorites, this is command, option, control, and shift plus the spacebar all at the same time. When you get the mailbox where you want it, then do the same thing to do the mouse up command. This has worked for me on both my macs so I know it works. HTH.
