Don't be confused. The iCloud e-mail address can be used as a separate e-mail account at no additional charge as part of the service. Your Gmail address will still be your Apple Id.

Hi all,
I'm sending this to the VIPhone list as well, so I'm sorry if you get it twice.

I was trying to change a friend's Apple ID to his iCloud address, just to keep things
simple, and planned to do the same for my own account later today. However, it disallowed
it, since "the email address cannot be in a domain owned by Apple". A bit of
googling, and I find that your iCloud account is an Apple ID in itself. I'm now
thoroughly confused. I have a Gmail address tied to my Apple ID, and I have an
@icloud.com address. Do I have two Apple IDs now? Do I have one with multiple addresses?
What would happen to my apps, music, and the rest if I wanted to move to my iCloud email
as my ID, assuming it is somehow different from my Gmail ID? I am just very confused, and
hope someone can explain exactly what's going on. Thanks!
