your assertion (incorrect it seems) about no ARM processors supporting on-board floating point led me to do some searching and sure enough, ARM, at least, has products that support onboard FPP. Check out the info at the following urls:

It appears that the Cortex-A8 has an onboard subsystem entitled "Neon" that has FPP and is designed to provide improved support for the kinds of multimedia apps being discussed in this thread.
