This is not a demand for fixes, etc. Just some comments from a new developer...
If you (list-members) feel the need to take platform comments and criticisms personally, please, please delete this email without reading it. :) Otherwise read on.. (and understand that I may get going on fixes for some of these issues, once the holidays slow down and I get some free time again.) On Tue, 13 Dec 2005, Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri did have cause to say: > As some may already know, Ars Technica published a review about 770 > and have some interesting points on some applications: > > http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nokia770.ars > > As I don't have one yet, it's great to get some feedback. Main problems were: > > - Mail: not that good usability-wise and slow. I think that some > junior job can fix most of things. Also common functions are missing, > like "delete" Mail is a joke. I was really hoping for that to be my primary use... its just impossible. :( > - Audio player: it should capture internet radio from browsers Mine does, at least for shoutcast.com. I suspect user error (or strange website configuration). > - Missing PIM: that will be addressed when GPE is officially released AFAIK GPE doesn't do syncing.. whereas this thing seems perfect for a blackberry-style "live" PIM remote with caching. (Or, minimally, at least the ability to do actual two-way sync to a central datastore..) I've got very little use for stand-alone contacts, since having a phone number in my 770 doesn't help me call it from my cell phone, and having to track email addreses in no fewer than 4 devices and 7 apps gives me nightmares. At this point, if it doesn't sync I won't touch it... (and yes, this is sent from mutt, and yes, I did hack something together to export my vcards to mutt aliases... :) ..) One big thing that seems to be missing from the reviews is the backup/restore app. Maybe I just got unlucky, but I installed a bunch of apps, ran the backup, reflashed (from -6 to -7 IIRC, might have even been -7 to -7) and restored... followed by having to reinstall/reconfigure all my apps. :( (Which, admittedly, does put backup/restore about on par with the other PDA-linux distributions. As unfortunate as that is. :( ..) On the good side, if you can keep it from running out of memory, the web browsing is every bit as great as the reviewers say. (And 'keep it from running out of memory' tends to mean things like 'avoid ajax' and 'periodically kill off and restart the browser' :( ..) And nethack rocks (along with bejeweled, and others). Definitely has potential, definitely needs help. (If minimo did http basic auth, I'd be very very happy. Something about my gregarius install gives opera hives, but minimo likes it.) _______________________________________________ maemo-developers mailing list maemo-developers@maemo.org https://maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-developers
