One reason why I wanted to intercept the sleep mode is because sometimes I want network connectivity for streaming music or downloading a big file or monitoring a remote server, but with the Nokia covered (for protection against scratches) and in my pocket while I wander around the building. Another application might be "war walking". :) I think Frantisek's URL (thanks Frantisek!) answers the question -- right now, network connectivity is hard wired to shut down with the cover closed.
