Note though that "future" means Diablo or later, not Chinook. We will
probably start offering this functionality for testing to the maemo
community during the Diablo development cycle and we will push it as
official (recommended on top of reflashing) when it's ready for
mainstream usage. This is the current plan, and is an evolution of the
improvements in the application manager and the reflashing process that
are being development for Chinook.

Chinook will offer as well backup of installed applications (see the
enhancement request http://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647 ), but
this means that your upgrade from the current IT OS to the Chinook
version will be still done as today, reflashing and reinstalling
manually.

So yes, a lot of improvement is expected in the software update area but
please be patient. I'm sorry if I gave the impression that upgrading via
APT was something to come immediately (someone expected the last update
to be working already with an APT alternative to reflashing).
