In light of bug 1636[1], some users are having to manually edit a gconf2
setting in order to stabilise their WiFi connectivity.

The solution for many seems to be the setting of the following gconf2 variable:

gconftool-2 --set --type int '/system/osso/connectivity/IAP/wlan_sleep_timeout'
'1000'

Since setting this variable requires xterm (which is sometimes difficult to
install when WiFi is flakey) or any other application that allows execution of
shell commands, it's a bit of a pain to install then cut & paste etc. And while
it might be possible for the end user to install gconf-edit, this is a
potentially dangerous option.

What would be quite handy (as a short term solution) is a very simple
application that can be installed from a single deb with no dependencies, and
which would offer the user an easy way to set this variable. The application
would be a GUI with only a numeric input field, or alternatively a list box
with values from 100 to 2000 in 50 or 100 increments and Cancel and OK/Set
buttons. And maybe a text box showing the current setting for the variable
would be nice.

Any developers out there able to whip something up and save a lot of end users
some aggro? :) Maybe it could be added to Extras repository when fully baked?
And you're guaranteed free publicity on the ITT Forums[2] too!

Many thanks in advance...
Neil
