I was able to install the scratchbox environment without any trouble on 
Fedora Core 4. FC4 is too old to have Xephyr so I was not able to 
actually run graphical programs in scratchbox.
Scratchbox includes the Debian tools dpkg, apt-get etc. and man pages for 
same; I could include them in my MANPATH on Fedora even if "man" itself 
was missing. I just needed to get my head around making packages instead 
of RPMs.
You need the cross-compile environment anyway, since the N800 is ARM and 
most desktops are x86, and you build packages inside that then copy them 
to the tablet. BTW, the gdb debugger is available and works fairly well
over SSH.
