I'm not sure that I entirely understand it either, except in the most general sense of knowing that hooking your unit up to an inappropriate power source can hose it. I think your best course may simply be to order an extra stock battery. It has the disadvantage of needing to be changed once every several/many hours, but will not invalidate your warranty. You may also wish to express to Nokia your desire for a high-capacity battery option, even at the expense of form-factor.

I guess there's some kind of communication between the AC-4U and 770, so normal external supply won't work at all.

I really need an external supply which can independently provide power to my 770.

To my knowledge, the 770 will not run without the battery inserted. Generic batteries will not function by design. Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, but it's not clear to me why inserting the battery and using the charger that comes with the unit is not acceptable to you. Maybe if you elaborate on your use case, folks will be able to provide more input.

Thanks for your information.
Inserting the battery and using the charger did work to me. But sometimes, I may be in a place where there's no wall power and my inner battery runs out of engergy. I 'd like to have an external battery which can support 770. So think about it, if I have a *6000* mAh external battery, theoretically I can use the whole day at anywhere! I don't understand why Nokia choose not to let 770 workable without inner battery or accept a normal external supply. Look at this: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=307&products_id=8236
No way to use it on 770!
