I've updated http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowTo_SwitchToHostMode with this

It would be nice if someone confirmed the "might work" part.

(Can I buy a USB hub that provides power to the 770?  I'm not all that
proficient with soldering irons.)

Some hubs will inject power into the socket that you normally plug into your computer (the square shaped one). If you get a female-to-female converter, you can use standard cables (the one that came with your 770 plus the one that you would normally ue to plug the hub into the computer) and a powered hub to do what you want without soldering. I have done so in the past. I would imagine that this doesn't work with all powered hubs. The only way I discovered that my hub back-feeds power was that it kept the fan running on my graphics card even when my system was powered off and unplugged!

I give no guarantees as to how healthy this is for your hub or 770 though.

I will try to give your modified instructions a spin when I get a chance. Thanks for updating them.
