Well in the x-term application you can add the pipe character to the toolbar shortcuts at the bottom of the window. From the menu select tools and then settings. Press the "Toolbar shortcut" button, then new. Title can be anything you want, value should be "bar" without the quotes. Be sure that the initial "b" is lower case, upper case will not work.
