What benefit does the community get from doing the work to allow anonymous edits? In a mailing list situation some mailing lists only allow subscribers to post; others allow non-subscribers to post. This is similar. Typically allowing non-subscriber posts is a pain because it lowers the barrier to spam. However that's often worth suffering (eg lkml) because it's more important to allow bug reports in. In this situation the sum total of anonymous browser contributions is *highly* unlikely to contribute enough to offset all the *lost* work members would have done whilst fixing spam and installing captcha software.
