yes, I can, but only because I've edited menu.lst _manually_.
the new kernel added 2 grub entries, at the end, both pointing to the 3.0.0 
kernel.
and the default one (first one) also booted the 3.0.0 kernel.
Every previous kernel I've installed (all of them) updates menu.lst with an entry for the previous kernel. Granted, it's not the default, but if you're hanging out here you ought to be able to handle that :) If it's as you describe, then it's a packaging bug that breaks with previous practice.
