Add to that: /tmp may be the fastest (ramfs) /var/tmp is machine-local, quite fast ~/tmp may be network-mapped (nfs), will be slower it is a speed vs. longevity tradeoff and also good reason to have all these choices. -- Say NO to spam and viruses. Stop using Microsoft Windows!
