Also check ~/.xsession_errors, and maybe try running without networking for a while, then without sound (e.g. in Sound Properties choose the profile "off" for each card, and then rmmod the modules). Another possibility is you have power saving enabled for the hard drive, and it's taking a while to wake up. If X or the window manager is partly swapped out then the kernel will need to wake up the disk to service the page fault, and in the mean-time X will likely be frozen. Also check whether caps lock, num lock lights work when it's frozen. I've actually been having something similar with magea 1 on my laptop and not yet tracked it down.
