GIMP and Krita do not have the same goals.

Krita aims at natural media painting (like Fractal Painter of old), e.g.
with chalks, pastels, oil. GIMP aims at being a professional-quality
image editor, more like PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro.

GIMP is currently much, much more mature than Krita, and has more
plugins and scripts too. Krita has some features GIMP doesn't, so there
are times to use one and times to use the other, as with MyPaint and
KolourPaint.

Possibly Krita should be a preferred application for anyone who uses KDE
(not me), or maybe kolourpaint, but GIMP should for sure still be
available.
