Sounds right. In that case, file a bug against the b43 driver for
your chipset.

My thanks to Frank and the others who offered help. It's this kind of
community support that puts Mageia ahead of the other distros and the
reason I'm migrating all my systems to Mageia (even the temperamental
laptops).

For the record, the timing issue that disrupted the safe mode boot was
resolved with updated packages, most likely drakx-net. I've been told
that the main problem has been resolved in the upstream 3.3.5 kernel
which will be our release kernel.
